Tusheti: Georgia's Remote Mountain Paradise

Tusheti is Georgia's most remote, pristine, and breathtakingly beautiful mountain region. Nestled in the northeastern corner of the country along the border with Dagestan, this wild and untouched land remains accessible only for a few months each year when the snow melts enough to open the treacherous Abano Pass. For those who make the journey, Tusheti offers an experience of true wilderness that has virtually disappeared from the rest of Europe — ancient stone towers, medieval villages that have changed little in centuries, and some of the most dramatic alpine scenery on Earth.

The journey to Tusheti is an adventure in itself. The only road into the region crosses the Abano Pass at 2,850 meters, making it one of the highest drivable passes in the Caucasus. The 70-kilometer drive from Telavi to Omalo takes about four hours on a narrow, winding road with sheer drops and stunning views. The pass is typically open from late May through October, though weather can close it at any time. Four-wheel drive is essential, and the drive should not be attempted by inexperienced drivers in bad weather. Alternatively, helicopter transfers are available from Telavi and Tbilisi for those who prefer not to risk the road.

Omalo is the largest village in Tusheti and serves as the regional hub. Perched on a high plateau at about 1,880 meters, Omalo consists of two parts: Upper Omalo, with its distinctive Keselo towers that once protected the village from invaders, and Lower Omalo, which spreads across a broad meadow. The Keselo towers, recently restored, offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Several guesthouses in Omalo provide basic but comfortable accommodation and excellent home-cooked meals featuring traditional Tushetian specialties.

Dartlo is perhaps the most beautiful village in Tusheti, and that is saying something in a region of extraordinary beauty. This medieval village sits on a terraced hillside above the Pirikita Alazani River, with its stone towers and traditional slate-roofed houses creating a scene that seems frozen in time. The village was largely abandoned during the Soviet era when residents were resettled to lowland areas, but in recent years some families have returned and restored their ancestral homes. Dartlo serves as a base for several excellent treks, including the route to Diklo and the trail to the Gometsari Gorge.

Trekking is the primary activity in Tusheti, and the region offers some of the best multi-day hikes in the Caucasus. The most popular route is the four-day trek from Omalo to Shatili through the Atsunta Pass, which connects Tusheti with the neighboring Khevsureti region. This challenging trek reaches an altitude of 3,430 meters and takes you through some of the most remote and beautiful landscapes in Georgia. Shorter day hikes are also available, including the trail from Omalo to Dartlo, which passes through several smaller villages and offers stunning valley views.

Tushetian culture is distinct from the rest of Georgia, with its own traditions, architecture, and even dialect. The region's famous stone towers, built for defense against invaders and blood feuds, are similar to those in Svaneti but have their own distinctive characteristics. Tushetian sheep cheese is renowned throughout Georgia for its distinctive flavor, produced using traditional methods in high mountain pastures during the summer months. The annual Atnigenoba festival in August celebrates these traditions with horse racing, traditional wrestling, and folk music.
